Thirty-two years ago today - July 13, 2026 - Southern Lights was born.
His dam, a thoroughbred named Southern Elite, needed a wee bit of help near the end of her labour.
I grabbed the two little hoofs pointing out and pulled. A few minutes later a wet, pale gold colt lay at my feet.
Grabbing a clean cloth I cleared out his nostrils. Long hairs covered his chin reminding me of an old man.
There was a moment he looked me in the eye. I could almost hear him ask, "Are you my momma?"
Elite was still recovering and hadn't quite figured out what just happened. I let her take her time and continued to rub the colt.
Just before the mare rolled up, the colt put his face toward me and blew into my nostrils. Sweet baby breath enveloped me like a mist from Heaven. As if I wasn't already in love but now I fell harder.
I breathed back into his tiny nostrils and we locked eyes once more as the mare sat up and whickered at her new baby. She got to her feet and began to lick him. I backed out of the stall and let them be.
Louie was a dream come true, a prayer answered and the beginning of a journey into a partnership I only dreamed of with a horse. He was my once-in-a-lifetime heart horse, and I miss him everyday.
So it is with great joy I choose this day to sign as an author with Perpetua Press. What would be his 32nd birthday, another dream has come true, another prayer is answered and another amazing journey into partnership has begun.
